A visit to AP University of Applied Sciences Antwerp during the IT internship fair

Our colleagues, developers Nicolas and Mohamed, visited the internship fair at AP University of Applied Sciences Antwerp to meet bachelor’s students in Software, Business and AI. Teal Partners will offer three internships in the spring of next year.

Nicolas, an AP alumnus himself, says: “About thirty students stopped by our booth. What appealed to them most was the broad scope of the job. At Teal Partners, we are all-round full-stack developers: you analyse, develop, test and talk directly to the client. We don’t work with project managers or testers. For a certain type of developer, that’s ideal.”

Experienced guidance

According to Nicolas, the guidance is especially interesting for students. “Every intern gets a mentor and joins an experienced team that helps them find their way. Of course, it’s great if the internship results in something we can build on in our software. But it’s just as important that the student learns something and that we, as a team, gain new insights from the proof of concept they work on.”

Self-managing

The students had questions about Teal’s projects and way of working. Nicolas: “Our approach is different from many other companies because our teams are self-managing. Teams decide for themselves how they work and, for example, when they hold stand-ups. That depends on the needs of the project and the preferences of the colleagues in the team.”

Mohamed and Nicolas also brought along the book Reinventing Organizations by Frederic Laloux. The book is about self-managing teams and is a source of inspiration for Teal Partners.

Three internship positions

One of the three internship projects is already known. Nicolas: “The team developing temporary staffing software for Actief Interim is looking for someone to help build a central task management system. Two more internship projects will follow soon: one around AI and one within a brand-new HR and payroll project.”

Discovering talent

For Teal Partners, internships are an important way to get to know new talent. “If an internship goes well and there is a personal match, there is a real chance that an offer will follow. This allows students to discover whether Teal is a good fit for them, and vice versa. For us, an internship is not a way to add extra development capacity, but a mutual learning experience in which we genuinely invest.”
